Artwork by grade five and six students from Morwell’s Sacred Heart Primary School is the latest to be displayed as part of the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre Foyer Exhibition program in Traralgon.
The newest exhibition is the first to showcase artwork done by primary school students, previously high school students have had their work displayed. Read more
Trafalgar doctor awarded

Trafalgar doctor James Brown has been recognised as the leading Medical Educator in Australia, at the Australian General Practice Training (GPET) awards announced in Adelaide.
Dr Brown, who is Director of Training with getGP (Gippsland Education and Training for General Practice) as well as practicing at the Trafalgar Medical Centre, was announced as Medical Educator of the Year at the awards. Read more
Northe fired up over arson

The Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has tabled a petition in Parliament that calls for the immediate implementation of minimum sentencing for arson with additional penalties added for each house, shed, vehicle, or animal lost.
The petition, signed by more than 400 locals, asks that any loss of life as a consequence of arson, be treated as pre-meditated murder. Read more

Deaths regarded as murder suicide

Homicide Squad detectives are treating the death of a man and woman in Gippsland as a murder suicide.
Detectives were called to a house in Ash Street, Morwell, about 4.30pm on Saturday after a man who went to that address found the body of a 25-year old woman at the house.
The woman had been stabbed. Read more
Chance to have say on the future

Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan has invited Victorians to have their say on the future of provincial Victoria.
Ms Allan said written submissions and an online forum would help to gauge the views of people in regional communities about the proposed blueprint for provincial Victoria which is due for release next year. Read more
Infrastructure grants for racing clubs

Five Gippsland racing clubs will share in $62,000 of State Government funding for a range of projects to improve racing infrastructure and increase community access to racing facilities.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Rob Hulls today announced the clubs in Warragul, Traralgon and Drouin would all receive funding through the Living Country Racing Program. Read more
Power company braces for protest

International Power Australia (IPRA) has said it will do all it can to protect Victoria’s power supplies from interruption from a protest today by environmental groups at Hazelwood.
International Power’s group manager for corporate affairs Jim Kouts said the company respected the rights of groups and individuals to express their view in a non-disruptive peaceful manner. Read more

Water levels cause for concern

Water levels in Gippsland Water’s Latrobe supply system are causing concern for the corporation, prompting it to flag the possible introduction of restrictions in coming months.
Rainfall in the Latrobe system since the start of the year has been well below average, with just 200mm falling for the seven months to 31 July 2009 (taken at Latrobe Regional Airport), compared to an average of 370mm. Read more
