Tour of Gippsland starts today

The five-day Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland road cycling race kicks off today (July 29) in Traralgon.
The tour will see riders from all over the country compete in the event, which takes them all around Gippsland, covering over 490km.
Latrobe City mayor Cr Lisa Price believes the event is a great chance for the community to get involved and see the Latrobe Valley. Read more
V/Line luggage racks criticised

Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Hugh Delahunty has called on the Brumby Government to reintroduce checked luggage on all regional train services.
Mr Delahunty said the unavailability of checked luggage services made train travel difficult for elderly and disabled V/Line passengers, including veterans. Read more

A selection of portrait works from Lowanna Secondary College, Newborough is on display until the end of July as part of the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre Foyer Exhibition program.
Latrobe City’s coordinator performing arts and venues, Kathleen Roberts said that the exhibition was called ‘The Almost Archibald Prize’ and that the works were developed last year as part of a school competition with Lowanna students from Years 7 to 11. Read more
Tree planting day in Churchill

Latrobe City Council is holding a community tree planting day in Churchill to commemorate National Tree Day on Sunday, August 2 from 10am to 1pm.
Entering its 14th year, National Tree Day, has to-date seen more than 13.4 million native trees and shrubs planted around Australia. Read more

Challenge to design for fire

Innovative ideas such as warning and prediction systems, shelter and protection devices and strategies for rebuilding communities have been presented to a design forum aimed at producing novel concepts to protect the community against the threat of devastating bushfires.
Environment, Climate Change and Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings, one of seven judges of the Design for Fire: Challenge Pitch at the 2009 Design Challenge, said he was impressed with the creative thinking shown by Victorian designers. Read more
Energy summit in Traralgon

A State Government energy summit in Traralgon today will bring together government, industry, unions and worker representatives to explore ways to drive jobs growth and investment in the Latrobe Valley.
Energy and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor said the summit included speakers from government and industry and provided an opportunity to discuss ways to develop and use Victoria’s brown coal in a cleaner and more sustainable way. Read more

Northe calls for more hospital beds

Additional beds would go a long way to easing woes at Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH), The Nationals’ Member for Morwell Russell Northe has said.
Mr Northe said the hospital’s poor showing in the recently released Your Hospitals report was symptomatic of a system where demand exceeded capacity. Read more
