New amenities for rose garden

The Friends of the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden are excited about the possibilities their new amenities building will provide.

The storage and learning facility is being constructed at the southern end of the garden, beside the Morwell Senior Citizen Centre, with Friends of the Garden volunteers anticipating great things to come of it. Read more

Four selected for leadership program

Four people who live in Latrobe City recently graduated from the Leadership Plus Leadership Program, an intensive program designed to meet the needs of a cross section of people with a disability.

Lynn Lancaster, Maria Slot, Ross de Vent and David Guthrie were successful in their application to undertake the 12 month leadership program to further develop their leadership skills. All four local participants in the 2009 intake were sponsored by Latrobe City through the Rural Access and Neighbourhood Alliance initiatives. Read more

Charity donation praised

The Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has praised the generosity of a Traralgon couple whose donation could have life-saving ramifications.

Traralgon Hungry Jacks owners Jim and Tammy Fkiaras this week handed over a $6000 cheque to Yinnar couple Joel and Sue Chapman. Read more

Hospital ball raises $100,000

Generous support from local businesses and the community has raised more than $100,000 for Latrobe Regional Hospital.

The money will go towards the hospital’s current campaign Operation LRH, which will purchase new equipment for the operating theatres. Read more

Boolarra wins Bike Ed challenge

Boolarra Primary School has won the Kristy Olsen Memorial Trophy for the fourth consecutive year, and Traralgon’s Grey Street Primary School was runner up in the Latrobe City leg of the 2009 Bike Ed Program Challenge held at the International Power Children’s Traffic School in Morwell today (Wednesday 2 September). Vision Australia needs volunteers

Volunteers are needed to read local newspapers on the community radio to the Gippsland area for people who are vision impaired, have literacy or language difficulties.

The difference that you could make to these groups are invaluable. Many listen for the convenience while others are effectively isolated from their community, tied to their farms or unable to access print media. Read more

Uniform grants available

Grants of up to $1000 are now available to sporting clubs across the Latrobe Valley for the purchase of uniforms, the Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said today.

With a funding pool of $1.65 million, Mr Northe said the Our Club, Our Future program can assist clubs with the purchase of items such as jumpers, socks, skirts, leotards, bathers, footy boots, runners, hats and tracksuits. Read more

Stevens concert raises $6000

Australian music icon Jon Stevens rocked a packed house and raised nearly $6000 for Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH) during a recent concert.

The Jon Stevens Trio entertained the crowd of nearly 400 at Traralgon’s Cargo Lounge as a fundraiser for Operation LRH. Read more

Tree planting day a success

Residents, local businesses and the wider community dug deep on Sunday 2 August to ensure that National Tree Day was a huge success at the community tree planting event at Eel Hole Creek Reserve in Churchill.

The event, hosted by Latrobe City Council, attracted around 50 people, who managed to plant, stake and guard over 1200 seedlings on the day.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price and Councillors White and Vermeulen also participated in the tree planting activities. Read more

Latrobe City Council is holding a community tree planting day in Churchill to commemorate National Tree Day on Sunday, August 2 from 10am to 1pm.

Entering its 14th year, National Tree Day, has to-date seen more than 13.4 million native trees and shrubs planted around Australia. Read more
